A Surprise Winter Proposal in Moorhead
Winter sessions in the Midwest can sometimes be unpredictable, but Halee and Grant’s proposal session turned out to be one of those rare, magical winter days that you wish you could have all the time. Grant had reached out to me ahead of time with a plan: he wanted his proposal photographed, in the midst of winter. It was such an honor to be trusted with capturing a moment this meaningful.
To keep the surprise intact, Halee was told that we were simply doing a normal couple’s session. She arrived thinking it was just a winter photo shoot together, but by the end of the evening she would be leaving engaged. Being able to witness and document a moment like that is one of the most special parts of what I get to do.
Magical Winter Day at the Park
We chose MB Johnson Park for the proposal location, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect setting. The park’s quiet winter scenery and snow-covered landscape created a beautiful and peaceful backdrop for such an important and intimate moment.
Even more incredible was the weather. In the middle of some truly crazy winter conditions, we were blessed with a bright, sunny day that felt almost warm compared to the typical Midwest winter. The light reflecting off the snow gave everything a soft glow that made the moment feel even more magical.
As we walked through the park taking what Halee thought were just normal couple portraits, Grant found the perfect moment to get down on one knee. Her reaction was incredibly sweet and genuine — a mixture of surprise, excitement, and pure joy. Moments like that are impossible to stage, and it was such a privilege to capture it as it unfolded.

Celebrating in Downtown Fargo
After the proposal, we continued the session across the river in Fargo for a few more engagement photos in the city. The downtown streets and evening light added a completely different look to the photos, giving them a mix of cozy winter romance and urban energy.
But Grant still had one more surprise planned for the night.
He brought Halee to a small speakeasy downtown where she thought they were simply stopping for a meal. Instead, when she walked in, she was greeted by a room full of friends and family waiting to celebrate the newly engaged couple. Seeing her reaction to that second surprise was just as special as the proposal itself — the perfect ending to an unforgettable evening.

Sessions like this are such a beautiful reminder of why photography matters. The excitement, the surprise, the joy, and the celebration with loved ones are moments that pass quickly but deserve to be remembered forever.
